Swimming After a Tattoo

Summer in eastern Idaho means trips to local reservoirs, pool parties, and soaking in hot springs. But if you have a fresh tattoo, jumping into water too soon can lead to serious problems. Understanding when and why you need to wait will help you protect your investment and avoid complications.

The General Rule

Wait a minimum of two to four weeks before submerging a new tattoo in any body of water. Quick showers are fine starting from day two, but extended submersion is off limits until the tattoo is fully healed on the surface. Some artists and dermatologists recommend waiting a full four to six weeks to be completely safe.

Why Water Is Dangerous for Healing Tattoos

Bacterial Exposure

A fresh tattoo is an open wound. Submerging it in water exposes it to bacteria that exist in virtually every body of water, including treated pools. Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Mycobacterium are among the pathogens that can infiltrate a healing tattoo and cause infection.

Chemical Irritation

Chlorine, bromine, and other pool treatment chemicals are designed to kill bacteria in the water. Those same chemicals are harsh on healing skin. They can cause irritation, dryness, and damage to the new skin forming over your tattoo, potentially affecting how the ink settles.

Water Saturation

Prolonged water exposure softens the skin and can cause premature lifting of scabs and peeling skin. If scabs are pulled off before the underlying skin has healed, it can pull ink out with them, leaving patchy areas that require touch-up work.

Specific Water Sources and Their Risks

Swimming Pools

Chlorinated pools are among the less risky options due to chemical treatment, but they still pose threats. Chlorine irritates healing skin and the warm, moist environment around pools can harbor bacteria on surfaces like ladders, pool edges, and lounge chairs. Wait at least two to three weeks minimum.

Hot Tubs and Spas

Hot tubs are arguably the most dangerous water source for fresh tattoos. The warm temperature creates an ideal breeding environment for bacteria, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes hot tub folliculitis. The jets and bubbles can also physically irritate healing skin. Wait a full four weeks or more before hot tub use.

Lakes and Reservoirs

Natural freshwater bodies near Rexburg, like local reservoirs and rivers, contain unpredictable levels of bacteria, algae, and organic matter. There is no chemical treatment to reduce bacterial load. The risk of infection from natural freshwater is significant for healing tattoos. Wait at least four weeks.

Rivers and Streams

Moving water tends to carry less bacterial concentration than still water, but Idaho rivers and streams still contain organisms that can infect a healing tattoo. The cold temperatures of mountain streams do not eliminate bacteria. Wait four weeks minimum.

Ocean Water

While not immediately relevant to landlocked Rexburg, if you are traveling to the coast with a fresh tattoo, ocean water presents its own risks. Salt water can be extremely irritating to healing skin and the ocean contains its own set of bacteria. Two to three weeks minimum.

What If You Accidentally Get Your Tattoo Wet?

Brief, accidental exposure is not usually catastrophic. If your tattoo gets splashed or briefly submerged:

  1. Remove yourself from the water immediately
  2. Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub
  3. Wash the area gently with fragrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm water
  4. Pat dry again and apply your regular aftercare moisturizer
  5. Monitor the area closely over the next few days for any signs of infection

Planning Around Water Activities
